Care Respect Inspire

Year 7 Wirral Schools Rugby Cup Winners 2019

What a ride!

After turning up every week to Rugby training, without fail, the year 7 rugby squad trained through some of this winter’s harshest weather. Some of the newly formed team had never even picked up a rugby ball before they began training at Pensby; they have now become stronger as a team and secured new friendships along the way. I hope they will continue into Year 8, helping to pass on the skills learned to help coach our new year 7

They have all showed great resilience throughout the past 8 months, learning new skills and developing rugby’s strong core values – Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship

In partnership with the RFU England Rugby ‘All Schools” Programme’, rugby union is more than just a great sport that all students can engage with, it can deliver benefits across the whole school. Rugby union is a driver for positive change in schools, providing a unique variety of development opportunities for young people. The advantages of rugby union go

far beyond fitness and enjoyment: it has shown to help to improve attendance, behaviour and student progress in schools.

The year 7 boys team have gone from strength to strength competing in this years revived Wirral Schools Rugby Cup Competition organised and hosted by Woodchurch High School. After winning a couple of friendly fixtures, Pensby Lions entered into the first round of competition matches in the Wirral Cup. After beating Mosslands, Bebington, Neston and Ridgeway, finally progressing to the final hosted at Birkenhead Park Rugby Club. Pensby Lions vs Neston in the final was a tough match; both teams should be commended for giving their all during the 2 x 25 minute halves.

Pensby High School (Pensby Lions) showing indefatigable spirit and, captained by Haig Bainbridge, beat Neston High School 6 tries to 3 in the Wirral Schools Year 7 Rugby Cup Final 2019. Tries coming from Haig and Ethan Bainbridge, Lewis Warburton and Sam Shepherd who also won referee’s man of the match.

Congratulations to the whole team and thanks to the staff of Pensby High School who have supported them on this journey.
